For the better part of a decade, major retailers (Walmart, Target, Kohl's, others) kicked off their in-store Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day. The tradition hasn't been without controversy, but it seemed it was a tradition that was here to stay – until the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2020, crowds became a public health threat, making in-store shopping riskier for consumers. Coupled with the push-back businesses faced about employee safety, it was no surprise major retailers were quickly announcing they would close their doors on Thanksgiving Day. Although COVID-19 was clearly the impetus, some retailers framed their decision as a gift to frontline employees who had worked hard all year. A handful of retailers did remain open, primarily pharmacies, grocery stores and other essential stores.
In 2021, many major retailers took note of consumers' positive responses from the previous year and once again closed up shop on Turkey Day. Some retailers, including Target, took things one step further, announcing that they will never again be open for in-store shopping on Thanksgiving Day.
If you are hoping to get a little in-store shopping done on Thanksgiving Day in 2022, have no fear. There are a handful of stores that will be open, particularly in the grocery space (everyone needs those last-minute ingredients, after all!). To give you a sense of what stores will be open and closed on Thursday, November 24, we compiled a list below.
Stores open and closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2022
Over the past two years, many retailers remained closed for Thanksgiving Day, with deals available to shoppers online. However, as in-store shopping becomes more common, we aren't sure 2022 will result in the same schedule.

In 2022, Belk confirmed in its Black Friday ad that it will be closed for Thanksgiving Day and open early at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.
Best Buy
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 5 a.m.
Best Buy has been a fixture in the open-on-Thanksgiving club for years now. However, since 2020, the retailer has stuck with the trend of closing its doors on Turkey Day – and that holds true for 2022. Find more details on Best Buy's Black Friday sale schedule and holiday shopping hours here.
BJ's Wholesale Club
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
According to BJ's store hours, the wholesale club will be closed again on Thanksgiving Day and reopen on Black Friday starting at 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. These are its regular store hours, but stores are staying open one extra hour on Saturday.
Costco
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 9 a.m.
Costco members probably aren't surprised that the membership warehouse club is closed for Thanksgiving Day. This isn't anything new for the retailer as it shuts its doors for most major holidays. The retailer will open its doors at the usual time, 9 a.m. on Black Friday.
Dick's Sporting Goods
Thanksgiving hours: Closed (stores and distribution centers)
Black Friday hours: 6 a.m.
Foot Locker
Thanksgiving hours: Closed (stores and distribution centers)
Black Friday hours: 10 a.m.
Home Depot
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 6 a.m.
Home Depot will open its doors to shoppers early in the morning on Black Friday, after staying closed for Thanksgiving.
JCPenney
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: Doors open at 5 a.m.
JCPenney has shared that it will be closed for Thanksgiving Day and open early at 5 a.m. on Black Friday in 2022.
Kohl's
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 5 a.m.
Kohl's has announced that it will once again close stores on Thanksgiving Day. Deals will still be available to shoppers online. On Black Friday, shoppers will want to set an alarm, Kohl's stores open at 5 a.m. local time.
Lowe's
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: Doors open at 6 a.m.
Lowe's stores will be closed for Thanksgiving Day and open early on Black Friday.
Macy's
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Macy's will host its Thanksgiving Day parade on Nov. 24. However, the store itself will remain closed. On Black Friday, shoppers can get an early start on their deal hunting – doors open at 6 a.m.
Michaels
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 7 a.m.
Michaels stores will be closed for Thanksgiving Day.
Nordstrom
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 10 a.m.
Nordstrom stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2022.
Old Navy
Thanksgiving hours: From 3 p.m.
Black Friday hours: 5 a.m.
Old Navy is rumored to open at 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. We will share more details when an official schedule is released.
REI
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: Closed
REI always closes its doors on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. The retailer's #OptOutside movement encourages employees (who will be paid over those two days) to get out and spend time with family and friends.
Simon Properties
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 6 a.m.
The largest shopping mall operator in the U.S. is closing all stores within its mall properties on Thanksgiving Day in 2022. Apart from two Las Vegas locations. Department stores within malls featuring exterior entrances could still be open on Turkey Day.
Target
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 7 a.m.
As noted above, Target will always close its doors on Thanksgiving Day. In 2022, the store will open at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.
Ulta
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 6 a.m.
In 2022, Ulta will closed for Turkey Day but we expect the store to open bright and early on Black Friday for beauty shoppers to find the best deals.
Walmart
Thanksgiving hours: Closed (Sam's Club locations, too)
Black Friday hours: 5 a.m.
Walmart has remained closed on Thanksgiving for the past two years and it is continuing this tradition into 2022. Walmart CEO John Furner recently shared in an interview on the Today Show that keeping stores open on Turkey Day is "a thing of the past."
