Black Friday was golden for computers, TVs, Blu-rays and camcorders, despite consumer electronics sales revenues decreasing year over year. Consumers spent $2.7 billion, down 1.2% over 2008 despite sales unit volumes being up, meaning retailers discounted products to drive sales volumes.
Deep discounts is what we predicted earlier this year as we knew retailers were focused on getting consumers to shop at all.
Computers
Computer sales were up 63% over last year, probably due to the larger number of netbook laptops on the market and new operating systems from Microsoft and Apple. The average laptop for Black Friday 2009 sold at $475 vs. $638 in 2008.
Televisions
LCD HDTVs had a great year probably due to a drop in the price in LCD technology. Sales were up 15% over 2008 with LCD TVs costing $501 vs. $642.
Other electronics having a good year:
Camcorder sales were up 55% probably due to the popularity of flip camcorders, Blu-ray players were up 53%, GPS devices up 15%
Trending Indications
In terms of trends, the 1.2% drop wasn’t as bad as the drop the previous year, which was a 3.4% decrease over 2007. Let’s hope the economy continues to rebound and next year we’ll be reporting increases in both units and overall sales revenues.
