Fall 2011 Trends in Clothing for Men & Women
Every fall we’re faced with dozens of new styles, some with staying power, others delegated to the clearance rack before Christmas. How is a guy or girl supposed to know which style suits them best?
Another issue with following fall trends is the cost. Fashion magazines get their inspiration from runway shows, but if you’re like the majority of people out there, you can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on one piece of clothing! That’s why we’ve put together a budget-friendly shopping guide to help you find your perfect fall 2011 fashion match:
60s Style
With shoes like Mad Men and Pan Am hot this year, it’s a given that 60s style is going to be big. Mod style took over the runways during Paris Fashion Week. Fortunately, discount retailers have joined in, and you can find 60s style clothing at really low prices online and in stores. For the guys: skinny black pants, colorful sweaters, and high necklines. For the girls: shift dresses, high-waist trousers and cable-knit tights.
Where to buy: Shop the New Arrivals and Must Have Looks sections at Express for a wide selection of 60s apparel. They ship to 60 countries worldwide (free shipping on orders over $125), so you’ll have the option of bringing clothing, accessories, and fragrance directly to you, wherever you are.
70s Style
Another era that’s made a comeback is the 70s. Full of vivid prints in colors like mustard yellow, fire engine red and plum, 70s style influenced the fashion industry in a big way. For the guys: wide leg trousers, button-up shirts, and cable-knit sweaters. For the girls: wide-leg pants, fringed handbags, and sleek jumpsuits. Be wary of going overboard with bold colors: choose one brightly patterned piece and wear solid shades to anchor the rest of the outfit.
Where to buy: Modcloth has one of the best online selections of mod and retro clothing, starting at under $30.
Biker Chic
Designers this season were all over biker style, with rough and tough-looking couture on models at Burberry, Prada and Marc Jacobs. For the guys: black leather jackets, pants, and vests. For the girls: same as for the guys, with the addition of leather shorts and skirts. Look for leather decorated with zippers and buckles as well as leather accessories like wristbands and fingerless. Keep leather to a minimum – wearing too many pieces at once looks tasteless (and a little scary)!
Where to buy: You’ll find cheap faux leather biker gear at discount apparel stores like Forever 21.
Collegiate Prep
Preppy outfits have always been the focus of retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle, but this year the style has extended to stores everywhere. For the guys: V-neck sweaters, tailored khakis, and polo shirts. For the girls: pleated plaid skirts, cardigans, and collared blouses. To jazz up a preppy outfit, add an eye-catching piece of jewelry or colorful pair of shoes.
Where to buy: The major department stores are the best spots to pick up preppy clothes at incredible prices: shop at Target , JC Penney or Walmart for the lowest prices.
Fall Color Trends
We generally think of fall as a time to wear more subdued colors: black, brown and navy, for example. While basic beiges, blacks and blues are always a big component of fall fashion, this year we’re seeing an array of bold hues.
The top five colors for fall 2011 are mustard yellow, rust, royal/midnight blue, wine, and emerald green. Colors that return year after year to fall fashion include olive green, champagne, silver, sage green, fuchsia, and red.
When you’re choosing fall styles, remember to take your skin tone and hair color into account before you buy:
Winter complexions: Winter complexions have blue or pink undertones and are generally brunettes with dark colored eyes. Wear black, white, navy, red, and icy pinks or blues. Avoid pastels.
Summer complexions: Summer complexions also have blue or pink undertones with pale, pink skin and are generally blondes or brunettes with light colored eyes. Wear pastels and neutrals, pink, plum and lavender. Avoid colors like orange and black.
Autumn complexions: Autumn complexions have skin with golden undertones. Many redheads are autumns. Wear colors with golden undertones like gold, beige and brown. Avoid navy blue.
Spring complexions: If you have a spring complexion, you likely have creamy, peach-colored skin and dark blonde, strawberry blonde or light brown hair and light colored eyes. Wear warm colors like peach and yellow. Avoid dark colors like navy.
