Popular Video Games Turned into SmartPhone Apps
From arcade games to consoles, the technology behind video games is constantly on the move. Now days, we’re seeing another shift in the gaming industry – console games being converted into SmartPhone apps. To celebrate this progression of technology, we’ve compiled a list below of the 10 most popular video games that have been adapted for the mobile market.
1. Atari All-Stars
Video gaming of any kind cannot be discussed without offering substantial props to the pioneers – game creator since 1972, Atari has brought us a hoard of the most timeless arcade and console games. Now, 40 years later, there is an iPhone app that puts many of their most popular all-star titles such as Pong, Centipede and Asteroids in the palm of your hand.

2. Tiger Woods PGA Tour
Although Tiger Woods’ popularity has decreased as of late, there is no question that the Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game was amongst the top console games in recent history – oh but now it’s an iPhone app with touch-screen “swing mechanics” and some of the best graphics on the handheld market.

3. PacMan
Speaking of video game pioneering, the ever-famous PacMan was first debuted in 1980 as an arcade game and has been a household staple ever since. While the graphics and objective haven’t changed a bit since its creation, it is now an iPhone app that is every bit as addictively entertaining as it ever was.

4. Rock Band
Exploding onto the scene in late 2007 via all of the major consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii), Rock Band was an instant classic. The interactive game allowed users of any age feel like an arena rock star, even if they had never picked up an instrument their life. With this widespread popularity, it only made sense that a handheld version would follow – and follow it did. The free trial app now comes stock on many Android devices!

5. Tetris
Making the list as another of the most classic games to ever crossover from console to app is the one and only Tetris. What appears to be such a simple concept of geometry has become one of the most recognizable game titles in all the world and is now a downloadable app on most any phone – SmartPhone or not.

6. Madden NFL
Named after pro football Hall of Famer and infamous sideline commentator John Madden, the Madden NFL video game series was first introduced by EA Sports in 1988 for home consoles but now carries the torch as both a console favorite and the “most authentic NFL experience in the App Store.”

7. FIFA
If American football isn’t your idea of proper sport, the FIFA Soccer series is your next best bet. Continuing EA Sports’ offering of the console-games-gone-mobile, FIFA 12 can be played on most any modern console at home, however, more importantly, it’s also available in the App Store for your iPad or iPhone.

8. Super Monkey Ball
Originally developed for Nintendo and booming in popularity shortly after, Super Monkey Ball is now available as a mobile app. What makes this mobile version so great is that it uses the same sensory controls as the Wii and puts your phone’s accelerometer to full use as you control the game by tilting your phone back and forth.

9. Assassin’s Creed

10. SimCity
Last but not least, SimCity is another of the most classic video games that has made the jump from console to SmartPhone. Originally developed by Maxis in 1989, this simulation of city building has seen its fair share of evolution and while the app program is a rather stripped down version of the console, it’s robust enough to keep your attention – especially when you destroy your city with one of the pre-programmed natural disasters.
