Black Friday TV Stats
Televisions have come a long way from the first clunky wooden sets with oversized dials! On September 7th, 1927, Philo Farnsworth created the first fully electronic television, but the TV didn’t become a popular consumer product until 1936. People weren’t overly eager to embrace the new technology, either. In fact, Darryl F. Zanuck, the head of 20th Century Fox, saw TV as a competitor to movies and predicted it would not catch on. His words, now famous, were: “People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”
In the last 10 years we’ve seen big changes in the design and capabilities of TVs: flatter screens and sharper images are just a few of the improvements we’ve seen in recent years. And, TV technology just keeps getting bigger and better! In 2004, the average TV was 27 inches, and today it’s around 37. Tech experts predict that the average TV size will be 60 inches in 2015.
The way that people watch TV has also drastically changed. Hulu.com, an online video service that plays hit shows, clips, and movies, now has around 43 million viewers. Statistics show that 59.9 million people watched full-length TV shows online in 2010. It’s become common for people to watch movies and television shows anywhere on devices such as the iPhone and the iPad.
