You’ve probably heard Christmas in July sales pitches from retailers, but here’s a new one for you: Black Friday in the Spring.

“What kind of March madness is this,” you might wonder? Home Depot is attempting to bring Black Friday back because their sales cycle doesn’t match most other retailers. “Spring is our Christmas” responds Craig Menaear, EVP for Home Depot merchandising when questioned about a spring Black Friday.

What is a Home Depot Black Friday?

You’ve got to give Home Depot credit for creative use of the term Black Friday because the mere mention of “Black Friday” sends thoughts of doorbusters, rock-bottom prices, and an opportunity to get a massive amount of shopping done in one fail swoop. Considering spring is when Home Depot sees the bling, it only makes sense they try to steal away business from home repair & gardening store competitors during their most competitive season.

However, the details get confusing. Home Depot’s Black Friday obviously doesn’t take place the day after Thanksgiving–the surprising part is that it doesn’t take place on a Friday, nor any particular Friday. Confused yet?

Home Depot’s “Black Friday is Back” campaign spans a 4-day window that varies depending on where you live. If you live in Southern or Western states, the sale may already be underway. If you live in colder Northern states you may not see the sale for a month or two.

Unfortunately Home Depot has no resource for you to find out when the black days will begin. You’ll have to rely on snail mail weekly circular ads.

Home Depot’s Spring Black Friday Deals

For the initial rounds, it appears there aren’t any real doorbusters, but some of the great deals include deeply discounted prices on select grills, patio sets, and buy one get one free on select live goods. These may change by location and state.

Unlike the traditional Black Friday shopping day, it doesn’t appear that you’ll benefit from lining up at the doors before Home Depot opens, nor will you win items sold at or below cost. However, you may benefit from holding off on a few purchases (especially larger ones like lawnmowers) until the Home Depot Black Friday sale comes to your neighborhood.

Though Home Depot’s execution of their special Black Friday sale is a bit weak on the amazing deals or doorbusters, it’s probably a good thing as super-competitive shopping armed with shovels, hedge clippers, and hammers in hand would be a dangerous proposition.
