Black Friday Store Hours Creep Into Thanksgiving

Posted by · Oct 30, 2024

Hi, My name is Tanya Clark and I'm the founder of CouponGirl.com. As a stay-at-home Mom with three kids, I've become somewhat of a Black Friday expert thanks to years stretching my budget so that I can keep each of my little ones happy. Every year I eagerly look forward to the release of the Black Friday ads so that I create my shopping list and map out which stores to hit first.

Years ago, planning to shop on Black Friday was easy. Sure, you had to wake up at midnight so you could go and stand in line at the store, but you knew that all of the stores opened at 5:00am and you could get in a few hours of sleep before having to wake up early to stand in line. However, over the last five years, all of that has changed.

Hoping to be one of the first to draw in a wave of Black Friday shoppers, retailers started to open earlier and earlier, with start times moving from 5:00am to 4:00am to 3:00am. Last year, some retailers announced that they would be opening up at midnight on Black Friday. This caused an immediate uproar not only from shoppers, but the government even got involved! In Massachusetts, 17th-century blue laws forced retailers to push back their opening times while other locals governments held meetings to try to prevent the midnight openings.

While I love the chance to get the deals a little earlier on Black Friday, retailers seem to have forgotten some of the negatives that shoppers have to go through to get those deals. While a store opens at midnight on Black Friday, shoppers need to line up at least 5 to 6 hours before then to make sure they get one of the coveted doorbuster specials. Even then, there is no guarantee that you will even get a doorbuster. Is it really worth cutting short Thanksgiving with your family to stand in front of Walmart or Best Buy?

Judging by recent history, stores will continue to push the envelope on how early they can open on Black Friday, with start times continuing to creep into Thanksgiving. While retailers think this is a great marketing ploy, it will really just continue to push people to shop online on Thanksgiving morning instead of standing in line on Black Friday. Plus, since BlackFriday.com lets you buy all of the Black Friday deals online and they give you cash back, it only makes sense to skip the lines and spend time with your family on Thanksgiving.

What do you think? Do you like stores opening at midnight or would you prefer that they pushed it back to 5:00am?

Since I work evenings at a hospital, I don't get off work on Thanksgiving until 11:30 at night so midnight openings are PERFECT for me! I haven't even had a chance to sleep yet! =) I will, however, miss some of the Walmart specials since they are completely outrageous and opening at 8 PM! Now I think that is too much!

If you work in retail you KNOW you will have to work the entire Thanksgiving week. Alot of people who work Black "Friday" (Thursday/Friday) will get other times off. Every retail store I have worked in (from Sam's Club to Disney Store) has been very accommodating with time off for the holidays. Many companies pay time and a half for working holidays (i.e. those that work Thanksgiving evening). When you work retail you plan your Thanksgiving dinner around your schedule.

And although there are many occupations that do not get the luxury of family time on the holidays, and I respect all those doctors and men and women of the military, the retail aspect could be controlled a little if others were considerate and abandoned these ridiculous shopping times on Thanksgiving and assure they have things they need and don't have to shop at closing time on Christmas Eve so these people could enjoy a little more time with their family.

For those of you that consider it a family bonding experience, I'm happy for you, but while you are out there enjoying that time, keep the employees of those retail stores in mind and the family time they have to sacrifice for you to do so. Most to all of them don't have a choice because it is required they be there. For anyone that works retail, the days of enjoying the holidays is over.

For me Thanksgiving isn't a family holiday. My family lives 1200 miles away and I see them at Christmas. Bring it on!!!

I have shopped Black Friday for 13 years and I hated last year. There were so many first timers who didn't understand how things worked (long lines, you might not get what you want). People were rude and Fighting/complaining. Every other year, people have been nice, cheerful, and sometimes even helpful. I hope they change it back to super early morning hours so only those people willing to sacrifice a little sleep will go out.

I would prefer the 5am opeing. I am not going out at midnight to shop for anything.

Nobody is putting a gun to people's heads and forcing them to go out there and shop for black Friday at midnight. If you don't like it don't go. But don't hinder other people that want this. As one person stated, this is a new experience that my family and I do together because no one was interested in getting up at 5 a.m. Now that it is midnight and we are already together, we put turkey and cake in ziploc bags, put the sneakers on and head for the stores. Get over it.

I like having the 5 am store openings rather than the midnight . I dont think we should cut our thanksgiving holiday short with family and friends.

I wrote an essay for college about this. My essay was more on the employee's point of view. because I work at Walmart. The added stress is awful. I guess it is another NON holiday for this year. No 4th of July because of drought, Little to no Halloween because of the cold and rain. Now this.

5am, I work in retail myself these retailers do not care if their employees have families, and there some retailers who don't even pay for working on the holiday

Everyone said the same thing before they started playing football on Thanksgiving, and that turned out to be one of the highest rated TV slots in history. List someone already said, if there wasn't a demand for it, they wouldn't do it, and in reality, I'm spending more time with my family going straight to a store line after dinner because a growing group of people want to come with me every year for the experience.

One thing you need to remember is that all these retailers wouldn't open up early if there was not a demand for the early times from the customers. Basically it's the customers dictating the earlier opening times.

I don't like that they keep pushing the time earlier and earlier. They should go back to starting at 5 am.

Pushing black friday sales into Thanksgiving cuts into an important family experience that every child should remember. 5PM is early enough, children need to spend time with extended family. Corporations need to back off on the holidays. It makes more sense to spread out the sales over several fridays like Walmart. People will still spend as much money. This day is a day for us to enjoy our families and be thankful for the lifestyle we all long for, the American dream.

Really don't like them opening at midnight or on Thanksgiving like Micheal's and Toys R us did last year. We wish they wouldn't do it.

Thanksgiving should be for the family. 5:00 is fine.

I liked them better opening at 5:00 am. Leave thanksgiving to be with family...not shopping.

5:00.

Being someone that works retail, and even if I didn't, I think the old tradition of a good old fashioned Thanksgiving dinner and passing around the ads from the newspaper was always fun, but now like you said, the earlier the stores open, the less family time shoppers and employees get, it's sad. The decision makers of these companies aren't missing out on it, they aren't the ones that are sacrificing the time with their families.
