Over the past week, major retailers (one after the other) have been announcing they'll stay closed on Thanksgiving, despite years of kicking off their Black Friday sales on the holiday.
Today, Kohl's joined the closed-on-Thanksgiving-2020 club. Like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and others, Kohl's made that decision due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a press release announcing its plans, Kohl's chief executive officer stated, "The holiday season is when Kohl’s shines brightest, and as we move into the holiday season of this very unusual year, we are adapting our plans in response to changing customer expectations and behaviors."
Last year, Kohl's opened at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving and remained open all night.
Kohl's has not released Black Friday store hours and plans. However, just like Target and Best Buy, it hinted that it would start releasing holiday deals earlier this year and offer customers convenient ways to get their purchases without lining up at stores on Thanksgiving. Per its press release: "Given the importance of safety and convenience, we expect more customers to shop earlier, search for great deals throughout the season, and take advantage of our online and omnichannel conveniences" (emphasis ours).
This suggests a longer Black Friday/holiday shopping season that's not confined to Thanksgiving week. See our other predictions about this unprecedented holiday shopping season here.
