This time it wasn’t in relation to the shopping day though, it was to my current nemesis in monitoring for people talking about Black Friday…what’s being called “the worst song ever” Rebecca Black – Friday.

“What kind of March madness is this,” you might wonder? Home Depot is attempting to bring Black Friday back because their sales cycle doesn’t match most other retailers. “Spring is our Christmas” responds Craig Menaear, EVP for Home Depot merchandising when questioned about a spring Black Friday.
Sometimes when a term or phrase becomes very popular, it gets abused and misused. “Black Friday” is no exception. Below are some examples of the use of “Black Friday” that leaves us scratching our heads, especially when you consider the history of Black Friday and what it has been widely accepted as today.

The National Retail Federation reports that a whopping 212 million shoppers visited websites and stores during Black Friday and the following Saturday and Sunday. That translates to an increase of 17 million shoppers from 2009!

Black Friday was golden for computers, TVs, Blu-rays and camcorders, despite consumer electronics sales revenues decreasing year over year. Consumers spent $2.7 billion, down 1.2% over 2008 despite sales unit volumes being up, meaning retailers discounted products to drive sales volumes.

As with years past, excitement built when Apple’s site announced their participation in Black Friday. For several days, they promoted it by bringing people to a splash page that told them to come see their Black Friday deals either online, or in-store, but not until Black Friday.
No Black Friday site had any Apple ad scans or information, but some, us, went ahead and predicted what Apple would do for their sale. Like the weather, the best information we had was what happened yesterday, or in this case: last Black Friday. In 2009, Apple offered 10% off some items, and free shipping.
